The distinctions embedded in this table are exactly what a translator must not blur. "Mechanically complete" and "commissioned" are different legal states. A "function test" is not a "performance test." Punch Lists That Change Every Day
The punch list is the most dynamic document on any project. Items are added at every walkdown, contested, recategorized, closed, and occasionally reopened. On an international project the list must exist in at least two languages at once, because the crews clearing items and the managers accepting closure do not read the same one.

Performance Certificates, Guarantees, and Damages
Performance test documentation is where commissioning language gets contractual teeth. Guaranteed values, including output, heat rate, efficiency, availability, and emissions, are written into the EPC or supply contract with defined test conditions, correction curves, and tolerances. The performance test report demonstrates whether the guarantees were met; the acceptance certificate records the parties' agreement that they were. Liquidated damages hang off the gap between the two numbers.
The certificate sequence itself varies by contract tradition, and the variations trap careless translators. Anglo-American EPC contracts typically move from Provisional Acceptance Certificate to Final Acceptance Certificate; FIDIC-based projects issue a Taking-Over Certificate followed by a Performance Certificate; Korean and Japanese vendor contracts often layer factory acceptance, site acceptance, and final acceptance with their own definitions. These are not interchangeable labels. Each certificate name maps to specific rights: who bears risk of loss, when defect liability starts, which insurances switch over. A translation that renders "Taking-Over Certificate" loosely as "final acceptance" has quietly moved a risk transfer date.
Translating these documents therefore means preserving the contract's own defined terms exactly. If the contract defines "Guaranteed Net Output" and "Provisional Acceptance," the translation uses the contract's counterpart terms and no others. We ask for the contract's definitions section, in both languages where it exists, before translating any certificate against it. Where Commissioning Meets Validation
In pharmaceutical, biotech, and medical device facilities, commissioning hands off to validation, and the paperwork boundary is formal. Commissioning proves the equipment works; installation and operational qualification prove it works for its intended GMP use, with FDA-inspectable documentation. The two document sets overlap heavily: a commissioning function test and an OQ test script may exercise the same valve sequence with different acceptance framing.
When a project has both, we align them.
