Honest scoping for the Indian market

Indian engineers read English. We tell you which documents actually need Hindi, and which do not, before you spend a dollar.

Devanagari that survives production

Conjunct consonants, matras, and font fallbacks break layouts silently. Every file we deliver is typeset and proofed by native readers.

Grounded in Indian regulation

Legal Metrology packaging rules, BIS standards, and pesticide labeling requirements are built into our checklists, not looked up after the fact.

Hindi Technical Translation for the US-India Industrial Corridor

US-India goods trade passed 129 billion dollars in 2024, and the technical paper trail behind that number keeps growing: pharmaceutical batch records, pesticide labels, training curricula for new plants, and packaging headed for a market of 1.4 billion consumers. Techniwords provides Hindi technical translation services for the companies moving that freight in both directions. We are a US-based technical translation agency, fifteen years in business, working exclusively with native Hindi linguists who specialize in manufacturing, pharma, and agriculture.

Hindi is the official language of the Union of India, written in the Devanagari script and spoken by roughly 600 million people. English holds co-official status for administrative and technical work, and that single fact shapes how this language pair behaves commercially. Unlike German or Japanese, where entire engineering libraries need translation, Hindi projects are targeted. You translate the documents that reach workers, farmers, and consumers, not the ones that reach design engineers.

The pharmaceutical corridor drives much of our Hindi volume. India manufactures a large share of the generic drugs Americans take every day, and its plants answer to FDA inspection on American terms. Our work for pharmaceutical manufacturing clients runs in both directions: English SOPs and GMP training turned into Hindi for operators, and Hindi plant records turned into attested English for auditors.

About four in ten generic prescriptions filled in the United States are supplied by Indian manufacturers, and India hosts more FDA-registered drug facilities than any country outside the US. When investigators walk those production floors, operator interviews and Hindi-language training records often decide how the inspection ends.

When Hindi Pays Off, and When English Is Enough

We would rather lose a few billable words than translate documents nobody needs. Indian engineering education is delivered in English, commercial contracts are drafted in English, and filings to CDSCO, BIS, and customs move in English. A surprising amount of technical content should therefore stay untranslated. The line falls where documentation meets people who did not come through English-medium schooling: machine operators, pesticide applicators, drivers, and household consumers.

That scoping conversation is the first thing we bring to a kickoff call. It routinely cuts budgets in half compared with a translate-everything quote, and it concentrates spend on the documents where a comprehension failure costs an injury, a rejected shipment, or a warning letter.

English to Hindi: Training, Labels, and Farm-Facing Content

The largest single category we localize into Hindi is workforce training. New plants in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh onboard hundreds of operators at a time, and translating operator training material into Hindi is what makes lockout-tagout, forklift safety, and GMP hygiene modules stick. We adapt storyboards and voiceover scripts along with the slides, and we re-time narration for Hindi audio, which runs 15 to 25 percent longer than the English original.

For consumer goods, the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011 require the mandatory declarations on a retail package, name of the commodity, net quantity, MRP, and customer care details, to appear in Hindi in Devanagari script or in English. Most US brands print both. Our packaging label translation work covers those declarations plus usage instructions, warnings, and claims, checked at artwork stage so a broken conjunct never reaches the printer.

Agrochemicals carry stricter language rules. Under the Insecticides Rules, 1971, label and leaflet text is reviewed during central registration, and leaflets must reach farmers in Hindi and the regional languages of the states where the product sells. Through our agriculture and agritech practice we translate label panels, antidote statements, and application tables for crop protection brands, and we keep the signal heading structure the registration dossier was approved with.

One recent project gives a sense of scale. A US agrochemical company commissioning a formulation plant near Indore needed a 14-module safety curriculum in Hindi. We delivered 40,000 words, re-timed 96 minutes of narration for audio expansion, and built a bilingual glossary the site still uses for every new hire.

Hindi to English: Registers, Logbooks, and Audit Evidence

Documents also flow the other way. Indian plants generate shop floor registers, cleaning logs, maintenance notebooks, gate passes, HR records, and distributor correspondence in Hindi, frequently handwritten and mixed with English abbreviations. When a US buyer audits a supplier, or when the FDA issues a Form 483 observation, those records become evidence that must read cleanly in English.

We handle this in two steps: a native reader transcribes the Devanagari, then a technical translator produces the English version with legibility notes wherever the source is unclear, so nothing is silently guessed. For submissions and audit responses we issue attested versions through our certified technical translation service, formatted so page and entry numbers match the source scans line for line.

Speed matters here more than in any other Hindi workflow. Audit clocks are short, and a response package often needs hundreds of register pages turned around in days. We stage those jobs across time zones, with transcription in India overnight and review in the US the next morning.

Devanagari Typesetting, Numerals, and DTP

Devanagari is an abugida: consonants carry an inherent vowel, modified by matras that attach above, below, or beside the letter, and consonant clusters fuse into conjunct forms such as क्ष and त्र. Fonts that lack proper shaping split those conjuncts into visible half-forms or empty boxes, and the failure is silent because the file still opens. We typeset in proven families such as Noto Sans Devanagari and Mangal, and in InDesign we require the World-Ready Composer, without which matras land in the wrong position.

Numerals deserve a paragraph of their own. Devanagari has its own digits, ०१२३४५६७८९, but the Constitution of India specifies the international form of numerals for official use, and Indian technical publishing follows that practice. Your torque values and dosages stay in familiar digits. The real numeric trap is grouping: the Indian system counts in lakh (1,00,000) and crore (1,00,00,000), so a figure like 12,50,000 is correct in a Hindi commercial annex and alarming to a US reviewer. We keep source figures intact and flag every grouping decision.

Hindi text runs 15 to 25 percent longer than English and needs extra line height for stacked matras, and Devanagari has no italics tradition, so emphasis moves to weight or color. When your files are finished in layout, our desktop publishing service returns print-ready InDesign, Illustrator, or PDF output proofed by a second native reader on the final artwork.

The Hindi Technical Translator Behind Your Project

A good Hindi technical translator makes one judgment call constantly: register. Formal, Sanskrit-derived shuddh Hindi reads as official but can be opaque to a machine operator, while everyday Hindustani absorbs English technical terms freely. On real shop floors, valve is वाल्व and gasket is गैस्केट, because that is what workers say. A translator who forces literary coinages produces text that is technically Hindi and practically useless, so our style guides fix the register per document type: plain spoken Hindi for training, formal Hindi for legal and label text.

The American Translators Association does not currently offer a certification exam for this pair, so we built our own gate. Candidates need graduate training in translation or a technical discipline, at least five years of documented technical work, and a scored sample test. Every deliverable then passes through an independent reviser under our ISO 17100-compliant process. Techniwords is a member of both the ATA and GALA, and we apply the same selection standard to Hindi that we do to certification-backed pairs.

Assignment is domain-driven. A pharma SOP goes to a linguist who has stood in a granulation suite; a tractor manual goes to one who grew up around farm equipment vocabulary. Each client gets a persistent termbase, so the Hindi chosen for a component in 2024 is the Hindi still used in 2026.

A Hindi Translation Company Fluent in Indian Standards

Working as a Hindi translation company for US industry means knowing the reference systems on the Indian side. The Bureau of Indian Standards publishes the IS codes that govern product safety, and electronics sold in India fall under the BIS Compulsory Registration Scheme. Standard designations such as IS 302 stay in English inside a Hindi manual; translating them would break traceability. The same applies to CDSCO submission vocabulary and to units, where India is strictly SI and a manual localized from a 120 V, 60 Hz US product needs a flagged adaptation for 230 V, 50 Hz mains, not just new words.

Dates in Indian documents run day-month-year, currency annexes think in lakh and crore, and bilingual layouts pair Devanagari with English in parallel columns. These conventions are small individually. Missed together, they mark a document as foreign, and Indian distributors notice.

Hindi is also only one of India's 22 scheduled languages. Plants in Punjab often train better in Punjabi, and we field a separate native team for it; our Punjabi page explains that pair. For everything else we cover, browse the full list here. As a Hindi technical translation agency we will tell you plainly when the language you need for a given state is not Hindi at all.

Process and Pricing for the English-Hindi Pair

English-Hindi is one of the most widely served pairs in the world, which works in your favor: per-word rates sit at the affordable end of our range, comparable to Spanish and well below Nordic languages. We quote on source word count, with repetition discounts across manuals and training series, and Devanagari DTP is priced per finished page.

Every project follows the same sequence: terminology alignment, translation by a vetted native linguist, independent revision by a second linguist, DTP where needed, and a final in-context proof. Machine translation is available for gisting large Hindi record sets, but we do not ship raw MT into Hindi: current engines drift in register, mishandle honorific forms, and occasionally swap numeral conventions, which is exactly the kind of quiet error this pair punishes.

We run projects from our Texas headquarters across all US time zones, with linguists in India providing overnight coverage. A typical 5,000-word training module returns in four to five business days; audit-driven Hindi-to-English work can move much faster when the clock demands it.

Hindi Technical Translation: Frequently Asked Questions

Does technical documentation for India need to be in Hindi?

Often not, and we will tell you when it does not. Indian engineers, regulators, and procurement teams work in English, so design files, contracts, and submissions rarely need translation. Hindi earns its cost in four areas: shop floor training and safety content, consumer packaging declarations under the Legal Metrology rules, pesticide labels and leaflets, and HR or EHS policies that hourly workers must actually understand. We scope every project against that reality, which usually means translating a focused subset of your library instead of all of it.

Do you use Devanagari numerals or international numerals in Hindi documents?

International numerals, unless you instruct otherwise. The Constitution of India specifies the international form of Indian numerals for official use, and Indian technical publishing follows that practice, so 250 stays 250 in a Hindi manual. Devanagari numerals appear mainly in literary or religious contexts. The bigger numeric risk in technical Hindi is digit grouping: Indian convention writes one hundred thousand as 1,00,000, called one lakh, and ten million as one crore. We keep source figures intact and flag any place where lakh and crore conventions could confuse a US reviewer.

Is there ATA certification for Hindi translators?

The American Translators Association does not currently offer a certification exam for the English and Hindi pair, so a certified Hindi translator in the ATA sense does not exist. We compensate with structured vetting: graduate training in translation or a technical field, at least five years of documented technical work, sample testing scored against our Hindi style guide, and a second linguist reviewing every deliverable under our ISO 17100-compliant process. For official uses such as FDA audit records, we issue a signed certificate of translation accuracy that US agencies accept.

How much does English to Hindi technical translation cost?

English and Hindi is one of the most widely served language pairs in the world, so per-word rates sit at the affordable end of our range, comparable to Spanish and well below Nordic languages. Pricing is based on source word count, with discounts for repeated segments across manuals and training modules. Desktop publishing in Devanagari is quoted per page. A typical training module of 5,000 words with formatted output is usually delivered within four to five business days. Send the files and we will return an itemized quote within one business hour.

Can you translate handwritten Hindi records for an FDA audit?

Yes. Batch register entries, cleaning logs, maintenance notebooks, and training attendance sheets from Indian plants are often handwritten in Hindi, sometimes mixed with English abbreviations. Our translators work from scans, transcribe the Devanagari first, then produce a certified English translation with a legibility note wherever the source is unclear, so nothing looks silently guessed. We have supported responses to FDA Form 483 observations where these records were the evidence, and we know inspectors expect complete, attested translations rather than summaries. Rush turnaround is available when an audit clock is running.

Do you cover other Indian languages besides Hindi?

Yes. Hindi is one of 22 scheduled languages, and factory workforces in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Punjab, or Tamil Nadu are often more comfortable in their state language. We maintain separate native teams for Punjabi, Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, and Bengali, each with its own terminology resources, because a Hindi translator should never be asked to approximate another Indian language. For pan-India rollouts we typically deliver Hindi plus two or three regional versions from a single English master, which keeps terminology aligned across all of them.
