For decades, demand for Korean technical translation services in the US meant one thing: consumer electronics manuals going out. That era is over. Korean industrial groups have committed tens of billions of dollars to American manufacturing sites, and the biggest bets are batteries: Hyundai's Metaplant near Savannah with its adjacent cell joint ventures, SK Battery America in Commerce, Georgia, and the Ultium Cells plant in Spring Hill, Tennessee. Each of these sites runs on process documentation authored in Korean by engineers in Seoul, Cheongju, or Daejeon, and staffed on the floor by American operators who read English.
That mismatch is now the center of gravity for the pair. Electrode coating parameters, formation protocols, equipment alarm lists, and change orders arrive in Korean and must become precise English before a shift supervisor in Georgia can act on them. In the other direction, OSHA-driven safety programs, lockout/tagout procedures, and HR policies written in English must reach the Korean expatriate engineers who supervise ramp-up. Samsung's fab in Taylor, Texas and SK Hynix's advanced packaging investment in Indiana pull an entire supplier ecosystem across the Pacific: equipment makers, materials suppliers, subfab contractors, and the construction firms that build cleanrooms. The documents follow. We translate tool installation procedures, facility hookup specifications, gas and chemical handling instructions, and qualification reports, plus the audit correspondence that flows between Korean headquarters and US sites. Korean fab documents are famously compact: heavy on Sino-Korean compounds, English loanwords in Hangul (웨이퍼 for wafer, 식각 alongside 에칭 for etch), and abbreviations that assume the reader grew up inside the company. A translator without fab exposure produces English that is grammatically fine and technically useless.

Korea builds more commercial tonnage than any country except China, and Korean yards (HD Hyundai in Ulsan, Hanwha Ocean and Samsung Heavy Industries on Geoje Island) dominate high-value segments such as LNG carriers. When a US owner, charterer, or financier touches a Korean-built vessel, Korean-language documents surface: builder's specifications, inclining test reports, Korean Register (KR) class survey records, and warranty correspondence with the yard. Hanwha's acquisition of Philly Shipyard and the US Navy's maintenance agreements with Korean yards have added naval MRO documentation to the mix. Korean to English, English to Korean: what actually moves in each direction
The two directions of this pair carry different cargo, and it helps to plan them separately. Korean to English is dominated by documents your US team must act on: process specifications and equipment manuals from Korean parent companies, supplier quality records and test reports from Korean vendors, KIPO patent filings pulled for due diligence or freedom-to-operate work, and audit findings written by visiting headquarters teams. These translations feed decisions, so precision and speed matter more than polish. A quality engineer reading a translated 8D report needs the failure mode named exactly, not elegantly.
English to Korean serves people. The readers are Korean engineers and managers stationed at US sites, Korean-market distributors, and regulators in Seoul. Typical files: OSHA-aligned safety programs and site rules, lockout/tagout and emergency procedures, HR handbooks and codes of conduct, plus manuals and KC certification files for products sold into Korea. Here register, honorifics, and natural phrasing carry real weight, because a document that reads like a machine wrote it will be politely ignored. One project illustrates the split: for a Tennessee cell plant we translated forty Korean process deviation reports into English for the US quality team in the same month we translated the site's English chemical hygiene plan into Korean for the launch team from Cheongju. Same client, same plant, two completely different jobs.
We staff the directions differently as well. Korean-to-English work goes to native English writers who read technical Korean; English-to-Korean goes to native Korean translators living in the language daily. No translator on our roster works both directions on the same project, because revision loses its independence when one person wears both hats.
Hangul on the page: spacing, emphasis, and fonts
Korean is written in Hangul, an alphabet arranged into syllable blocks, and it behaves unlike any European script in layout. Three mechanics matter for technical documents:
- Word spacing (띄어쓰기). Korean uses spaces, but its spacing rules are grammatical, not intuitive to non-natives: particles attach to the preceding noun, compound nouns split or join depending on convention. Incorrect spacing is the fastest way for a translation to look machine-generated to a Korean engineer.
- No native italics. Korean typography has no italic tradition, so source-document emphasis has to be re-expressed with bold weight, a different font, quotation marks, or dot emphasis. A DTP operator who simply applies the italic style produces artificially slanted Hangul that reads as an error.
- Fonts and line breaking. We set Korean in fonts with full Hangul coverage (Noto Sans KR, Malgun Gothic, KoPubWorld for print) and control line breaking so that syllable blocks and attached particles wrap correctly in tables and warning labels.
Korean text is often more compact than its English counterpart, which means English-to-Korean layouts gain white space while Korean-to-English work expands and overruns text frames. For software strings this cuts both ways: short Korean labels hide the fact that the language needs different word order in composed messages, which is one reason our software and UI localization service tests Korean builds with native reviewers rather than trusting string-by-string review.
Honorifics and register: why Korean training content needs a style decision
Korean grammar encodes respect. Every sentence in a manual, e-learning module, or safety briefing commits to a speech level, and the choice is audience-facing in a way English writers never confront. Technical documentation conventionally uses the formal polite 하십시오체 register: instructions end in -하십시오 ("please do"), warnings in -하지 마십시오 ("do not"). Training narration sometimes softens to the polite 해요체 to sound less bureaucratic, and internal engineering notes drop honorifics entirely. Getting this wrong has real consequences: safety training that addresses experienced Korean engineers in blunt plain style reads as disrespectful, and workers disengage from content that condescends. We fix the register in the style sheet before translation begins, with the client's Korean stakeholders signing off on a sample page first.
KS standards, KC marks, and the regulatory context
Korea maintains its own industrial standards body of reference: KS, the Korean Industrial Standards administered by KATS, the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards. Inbound supplier documentation cites KS standards constantly (KS B for mechanical, KS C for electrical), and we translate the citations with their exact designations so a US engineer can map them to ASTM or IEC equivalents rather than lose the reference. Products entering Korea face KC certification, whose test reports and technical files must be filed in Korean. Since 2022, Korea's Serious Accidents Punishment Act has made executives personally liable for fatal workplace accidents, which has pushed Korean companies operating in the US to document safety procedures bilingually and with unusual care. Much of our recent Korean SOP translation volume traces directly to that law: procedures once kept informal are now written down, translated, and audited.
Chemical documentation adds one more layer. Korea's Occupational Safety and Health Act requires Korean-language MSDS filings for substances used in Korean workplaces, and the K-REACH registration regime generates its own dossier translations for US chemical suppliers selling into Korea. For a Korean-invested plant on US soil the flow reverses: Korean-language safety data sheets arriving with imported process chemicals must be converted into OSHA-compliant English versions before the material can be staged. We keep a chemical terminology base for exactly this traffic, aligned on both GHS classifications and the CAS numbers that anchor every sheet.
How we vet a Korean technical translator
The American Translators Association certifies both Korean into English and English into Korean, so a Korean technical translator working on our projects can hold, and is expected to hold, an exam-based credential rather than just a claim of bilingualism. Certification is the entry ticket; the real test is domain reading. Our screening asks candidates to translate a genuine fab procedure or class survey excerpt, and we score terminology decisions, handling of Hangul-embedded English abbreviations, and whether the candidate flags source ambiguities instead of papering over them. Is ATA certification available for Korean?
Yes. The American Translators Association offers certification in both Korean into English and English into Korean, and we use it as the baseline credential for the pair. Every project deliverable also receives full independent revision by a second Korean linguist under our ISO 17100-compliant process, regardless of whether the client requests it.
How is Korean translation priced, per word or per character?
Korean does not divide into words the way English does, so per-English-word counts understate Korean source volume. We quote Korean-to-English projects on Korean source characters or on scoped target words, and we always state the counting basis on the quote itself so you can compare vendors on equal terms. English-to-Korean is quoted per English source word. The pair prices in the upper-middle range, above major European languages, and our quotes include independent revision rather than listing it as an optional extra.
Can you handle Korean shipbuilding and class documentation?
Yes. We translate builder's specifications, sea trial and inclining test reports, Korean Register survey records, warranty claims, and yard correspondence for vessels built at Korean shipyards, in both directions. This documentation mixes maritime English loanwords, Korean yard shorthand, and class society formatting, so we assign it to translators with marine engineering backgrounds.
