American shipping lives with a productive contradiction. The Jones Act requires vessels moving cargo between US ports to be built in American shipyards, yet almost everything installed aboard those hulls comes from somewhere else. Main engines are licensed from MAN Energy Solutions and WinGD and often manufactured in Korea or Japan. Thrusters, winches, and deck cranes arrive from Germany, Norway, and the Netherlands. Navigation electronics come from Japan. Nothing moves in commercial shipping without classification. ABS, DNV, and Bureau Veritas dominate the American market, with ClassNK and Korean Register appearing wherever Asian-built equipment or export projects are involved. Each society publishes rules in English, but the supporting paperwork that flows around a survey rarely stays in one language: a Korean engine builder's shop trial records, a German supplier's type approval file, a Brazilian yard's welding procedure qualifications. SOLAS, the IMO, and the strange discipline of maritime English
Shipping is the rare industry with a legislated lingua franca. SOLAS Chapter V requires English to be available for bridge-to-bridge and bridge-to-shore safety communication where crews share no other working language, and the IMO's Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP) codify exactly how that English should sound. "Say again" replaces "repeat." "I require assistance" carries a precise operational weight that "please help" does not.
This shapes translation work in a way outsiders rarely expect. When we translate a bridge procedures manual or an emergency muster card, the English side must conform to SMCP phrasing, and the other language must map onto it without drift, because a Spanish-speaking deckhand and a Filipino officer will fall back on the standard phrases in a real emergency. Safety management system procedures under the ISM Code face the same constraint: the manual must exist in a working language the crew understands, and auditors check that it does. A rule with teeth: under the ISM Code, a vessel's safety management documentation must be provided in a working language understood by the crew. Port state control officers verify this during inspections, and a manual the crew cannot read is a detainable deficiency in serious cases.
From keel laying to delivery: the newbuild paper mountain
A newbuild contract produces documents in waves that follow the production schedule. Early on come the specification and the maker's list, then approval drawings circulating between the yard, the owner, and class. Mid-construction brings welding procedure records, material certificates, and equipment shop trial reports from suppliers on three continents. The final push generates the heaviest translation load: commissioning protocols, sea trial programs and results, and the complete onboard documentation set the crew inherits at delivery.
We support every wave, and two document families dominate. The Coast Guard layer: 46 CFR and the workboat fleet
Class rules govern the big ships, but most American hulls are workboats, and their world is written in Title 46 of the Code of Federal Regulations. The rule with the widest recent impact is Subchapter M, which brought roughly 5,000 towing vessels under Coast Guard inspection and required each operator to run either a Towing Safety Management System or an annual Coast Guard inspection regime. Overnight, companies that had operated on institutional memory needed written procedures: watchkeeping, towline handling, engine room rounds, drug and alcohol policies, drill schedules.
The translation angle is practical rather than theoretical. Gulf Coast and inland towing crews include many native Spanish speakers, and a TSMS binder that deckhands cannot read fails at its one job, which is changing behavior aboard the boat. We translate TSMS procedures, drill guides, and orientation materials into working Spanish that matches the English of record, and we mark the English version as controlling so auditors see a clean document hierarchy. The same pattern applies to ballast water management: the Coast Guard type-approves treatment systems under 46 CFR 162.060, most of the approved systems are Norwegian, German, or Korean designs, and their operation and maintenance manuals reach American engine rooms through translation. A crew that misreads a bypass procedure on a ballast water system creates a federal compliance problem in a single valve movement, which is why those manuals get the same independent revision as our safety-of-life documents.
Repair yards live under this layer too. A drydocking generates specifications, condition reports, and coating inspection records, and when the owner is Latin American or European the whole exchange runs bilingual. Offshore wind: a new American fleet with European DNA
The offshore wind buildout has commissioned a class of vessels the US fleet never needed before: wind turbine installation vessels, service operation vessels, and crew transfer vessels. The Jones Act requires the ones working point-to-point in US waters to be American-built, but the designs and much of the mission equipment are European, drawn from Dutch, Danish, and Norwegian offshore experience. The result is exactly the documentation mix we specialize in: a Wisconsin or Texas yard building to a European design package, with jacking systems, motion-compensated gangways, and dynamic positioning equipment documented in the suppliers' home languages.

Terminology traps below the waterline
Marine vocabulary is old, national, and unforgiving of approximation. A few examples from our revision logs:
- Gross tonnage vs. displacement. One is a volume-based regulatory measure, the other a weight. Translators from general backgrounds swap them, and the error changes which rules apply to the vessel.
- Bulkhead, deckhead, sole. Shipboard structure has its own nouns. A translated fire plan that says "wall" and "ceiling" reads as amateur work to any surveyor and can misidentify fire boundaries.
- Making way vs. underway. A vessel can be underway without making way, and collision regulations treat the states differently. Languages that express both with one verb need careful handling.
- Korean position terminology. Korean shipyard documents describe locations by frame number and reference lines; preserving the frame convention matters more than elegant phrasing.
- Sea trial tolerances. "About 16 knots" and "16 knots minus tolerance per contract" are different promises. Trial reports get numeric language matched to the building contract.
Every marine client gets a vessel-specific glossary that records these decisions, including the frame numbering, deck naming, and system abbreviations used aboard that particular hull. The second project on the same vessel always goes faster than the first.

Where SMCP applies, yes. Bridge procedures, emergency instructions, muster cards, and safety management content are translated against a dedicated SMCP-aligned glossary for each language, so the phrasing crews learn in training matches the phrasing in their documents. This matters under the ISM Code, which requires safety management documentation in a working language the crew understands, and it matters in emergencies, when everyone falls back on the standard phrases. Documents outside the safety domain use normal technical register.

Korean builders and engine licensees supply much of the machinery installed in American hulls, and official English documentation often lags the Korean original by months.
