A Test Report Travels Further Than the Product It Describes

A single report can pass through more hands than the sample ever did. The lab issues it, the manufacturer files it, a certifier reviews it, a customer's quality department audits against it, and years later a regulator or an opposing expert may read it line by line. Test report translation exists because those hands increasingly belong to people in different countries: a Stuttgart lab tests a power supply, a Chicago certifier evaluates the file, a Guadalajara plant builds to it.

What makes this document family unusual is its mixed nature. Half of a test report is untouchable data: measured values, serial numbers, method designations, accreditation symbols. The other half is careful prose: test conditions, observations, deviations from the method, opinions and interpretations. A translator must know, clause by clause, which half they are standing in. ISO/IEC 17025 and Why Mutual Recognition Still Needs Translation

Accredited laboratories worldwide work under ISO/IEC 17025, and their accreditation bodies, A2LA and ANAB in the US, DAkkS in Germany, CNAS in China, recognize one another through the ILAC Mutual Recognition Arrangement. On paper, a result from an accredited lab in Shenzhen carries the same technical weight as one from Ohio. In practice, the arrangement recognizes the competence behind the report, not the language on it. The receiving engineer, certifier, or customs official still has to read the thing.

That gap is where we work. Translating an accredited report means preserving the markers that give it standing: the accreditation body's name and symbol, the certificate number, the statement that results relate only to the items tested, the signatories and their roles. It also means handling the report's normative skeleton correctly. ISO/IEC 17025 clause 7.8 prescribes what a report must contain, from unambiguous item identification through to decision rules, and reviewers at certification bodies check translated reports against exactly that anatomy. A translation that garbles the decision rule statement, or drops the environmental conditions paragraph as boilerplate, hands the reviewer a reason to reject the file.

Cited Methods: ASTM, EN, and ISO References Must Survive Intact

Every result in a report hangs on a method reference: tensile properties per ISO 6892-1, flammability per UL 94, salt spray per ASTM B117. These designations are identifiers, and we transfer them character for character, including the year suffix that fixes which edition the lab used. The trap for careless translators is equivalence. ASTM D638 and ISO 527 both cover tensile properties of plastics, and they are not interchangeable: specimen geometries and speeds differ, and results under one cannot be reported under the other. A translator who "helpfully" substitutes the reference familiar to the target audience has silently changed what was tested.

Where a receiving party genuinely needs to understand a foreign method, we add a labeled translator's note identifying the standard's subject matter, without asserting equivalence to any domestic standard. Determining whether an EN result satisfies an ASTM requirement is an engineering judgment that belongs to your team; some clients ask us for internal working translations of the standards themselves, through our standard translation services, precisely to make that judgment on solid ground.

Measurement Uncertainty: Small Words With Large Consequences

The uncertainty statement is the most technically loaded sentence in any report. "The expanded uncertainty is 0.8 mg, with a coverage factor k=2, corresponding to a coverage probability of approximately 95%." Each term in that sentence comes from the GUM and the International Vocabulary of Metrology, and each has a fixed equivalent in major languages. Improvising here produces text that reads plausibly and means something else: confusing standard and expanded uncertainty, rendering coverage probability as confidence level, or blurring accuracy into precision.

Our revisers check uncertainty language against the published metrology vocabulary in both languages. The same discipline covers conformity statements. Since the 2017 revision of ISO/IEC 17025, labs must state the decision rule applied when declaring a pass or fail, and phrases like "guard band" or "shared risk" must arrive in English as the terms US reviewers use, not literal renderings. Reports whose downstream life includes instrument qualification interact with the same vocabulary; the team that handles calibration certificate translation for our clients applies one glossary across both document types.

Translate the Text, Never Convert the Values

The firmest rule in our lab work: numbers are evidence, and evidence does not get edited. If the report says the sample failed at 412 MPa, the translation says 412 MPa, even for a reader who thinks in ksi. Converting introduces rounding, and rounding introduces a number the lab never measured. Whoever needs converted figures can produce them downstream, clearly separated from the record. A decimal comma is not a typo. European labs write 1,25 mm where American readers expect 1.25 mm. We keep the lab's notation and flag the convention once at the head of the translation, because silently reformatting thousands of values is exactly how a 1,250 becomes a 1.250.

Cross-Border Homologation: Making a TÜV File Work for UL

A large share of our report work supports certification transfers. A manufacturer holds a TÜV Rheinland or TÜV SÜD type-test file in German and wants UL or CSA recognition for North America; the certifier will accept existing test data under certain schemes, but the engineering reviewer needs it in English. The same road runs eastward when US files support CCC applications in China. In these projects the translation is read by professional skeptics whose job is to find gaps, so fidelity to the source's exact scope, which clauses were tested, which ratings claimed, which deviations recorded, decides whether existing data is accepted or the product gets retested at six figures of cost.

One recent engagement: a power-supply manufacturer needed 60 TÜV reports translated from German for a UL recognition project, roughly 1,400 pages of type-test data. Mill Test Reports and EN 10204: The Metallurgical Branch of the Family

Alongside laboratory reports proper sits a document US buyers meet constantly in imported steel and alloys: the mill test report, issued under EN 10204. The type number printed on it defines its evidentiary weight, and purchasing teams need that nuance to survive translation. A type 2.2 test report states results from non-specific inspection; a type 3.1 inspection certificate reports specific tests on the delivered lot, validated by the mill's own authorized inspector; a type 3.2 adds an independent or purchaser's representative to the validation. Rendering all three loosely as "mill cert" flattens distinctions that procurement contracts, and ASME construction codes that require 3.1 material, depend on.

The content itself is compact and dense: heat numbers, chemical composition tables against the grade's specified ranges, mechanical results from tensile and impact testing, heat treatment condition, and the standard designations for the grade, EN 10025 or GB/T 700 or JIS G3101. Heat numbers and grade designations transfer verbatim; the surrounding declarations, delivery condition wording, and inspector attestations get translated with the document type's exact terminology. We handle steady volumes of German and Chinese mill documentation for importers and fabricators, usually in one or two business days per batch, because material sitting in receiving inspection is material not earning anything.

When the mill paperwork disagrees with the purchase order, the translation is often where the disagreement first becomes visible. We flag mismatches we notice, grade designation on the certificate differing from the one on the packing list, for instance, as reviewer notes rather than silently normalizing them. That habit has turned more than one routine translation order into a caught supply-chain error.

Chinese Lab Reports and Supplier Qualification

The other steady stream is inbound supplier data. US manufacturers qualifying components from Chinese suppliers receive CNAS-accredited reports on materials, RoHS screening, and reliability testing, and the sourcing decision waits on someone reading them properly. Machine translation gets the tables mostly right and the qualifying prose dangerously wrong, particularly the remarks column where labs note sample anomalies and method deviations. Those remarks are where risk hides. Test Report Translation: Common Questions

Do you convert test values into US units?

No, and this is deliberate policy. Measured values are evidence produced by calibrated instruments under a specified method, and converting them introduces rounding the lab never performed. The translation reproduces every value and unit exactly as issued, keeps the lab's decimal notation with a note explaining the convention, and leaves any conversion to your engineers, clearly outside the record. Certifiers and regulators expect this treatment, and reports we translate pass their reviews because of it.

Can the translation be certified for an authority or certification body?

Yes. Each delivery can include a signed certificate of translation accuracy on our letterhead, identifying the source document, language pair, and the qualifications behind the work. This format is accepted by certification bodies, customs authorities, and US regulators that require English documentation of foreign test data.
