Consider a typical German sentence stating that reference standards are traceable to national standards through an unbroken chain of comparisons, each with stated uncertainties. Compress that into "calibrated with certified equipment" and the legal substance is gone. What ISO/IEC 17025 Requires a Certificate to Contain
ISO/IEC 17025, the accreditation standard for testing and calibration laboratories, spells out in clause 7.8 what a calibration certificate must report. Because the structure is standardized, our translations follow it element by element:

Decimal conventions deserve their own warning. Much of the world writes 0,05 mm where American readers expect 0.05 mm. We normalize decimal separators to US convention and state that normalization in a translator's note, so no one wonders whether a comma was a typo. What we never do is convert units. A certificate issued in micrometers stays in micrometers, because the calibration was performed and its uncertainty calculated in those units.
Expanded Uncertainty and k=2: Vocabulary With No Room for Style
Uncertainty reporting is where general-purpose translators do the most damage. The phrase "expanded uncertainty with coverage factor k=2" comes from the GUM, the internationally adopted Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement, and every word in it is load-bearing. Renderings like "maximum error", "precision of about", or "tolerance" are not stylistic variants. They are different metrological concepts, and substituting one for another changes what the certificate claims.
k=2 means roughly 95% confidence, and auditors know it. A coverage factor of k=2 corresponds to a confidence level of approximately 95% for a normal distribution. An AS9100 auditor who sees "guaranteed accuracy" where the source said "expanded uncertainty (k=2)" will question the certificate, and a questioned certificate can pull every measurement made with that instrument into the audit's scope.

Certificate or Report? Two Documents, Often One File
The terms get used interchangeably on the shop floor, but metrology distinguishes them. The certificate is the formal attestation: instrument identity, traceability, results, uncertainty, and the laboratory's accreditation, all on letterhead with a signature. The calibration report is the fuller working document behind it, recording as-found and as-left data point by point, adjustments performed, and any limitations or out-of-tolerance conditions discovered. Many foreign laboratories ship both stapled together, and clients frequently order calibration report translation along with the certificate because the report is where the interesting information lives.
The as-found data matters more than most people expect. If an instrument arrives at recalibration out of tolerance, your quality system probably requires an impact assessment: which measurements did that instrument make since its last calibration, and could any accepted product actually have been nonconforming? That assessment can only start from a precise translation of the out-of-tolerance notation and the deviation values. Rounding the language there does not simplify the document. It hides a recall decision.
