English to German: Selling and Supporting Equipment in the DACH Market

Going the other way, the driver is law before it is preference. Regulation (EU) 2023/1230, which replaces the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, keeps the long-standing rule that instructions must reach the user in an official language of the member state where the machine is placed on the market. Sell a conveyor, a packaging line, or a diagnostic bench into Germany or Austria and the German manual is not a courtesy. It is a condition of the CE mark you are claiming.

German technical style has its own register decisions, and getting them wrong marks a document as translated. Operator instructions in German avoid addressing the reader as du almost everywhere; industrial documentation uses Sie or, more often, the compressed imperative-infinitive style German engineers expect: "Netzstecker ziehen. Anlage gegen Wiedereinschalten sichern." Marketing copy for the same product may loosen up, and software aimed at younger trade audiences increasingly uses du, so we agree on the register per document type before a single sentence is translated. Warnings follow the signal word conventions German readers know from DIN EN 82079-1 and ANSI Z535 crosswalks: GEFAHR, WARNUNG, VORSICHT, HINWEIS, each mapped consistently, never improvised.

Austria and Switzerland read the same standard German in technical contexts, with small lexical differences (Jänner for January in Austrian administrative text, ß dropped entirely in Swiss orthography). These compounds are precise and unambiguous, and they are also typographic wrecking balls: a 34-character word cannot wrap, cannot be abbreviated on the fly, and will blow through a table column, a button label, or a wire marker field that was sized for English.

Plan for German text to run 30 to 35 percent longer than the English source overall, with individual UI strings doubling. In practice that means three things.
