On a Drawing, Every Word Is an Instruction

Engineering drawing translation is unlike any other language work because a drawing has almost no redundancy. A user manual can explain the same point three ways; a drawing says it once, in four or five words, and a machinist two continents away acts on those words. "BREAK ALL SHARP EDGES .015 MAX" is a requirement, not a suggestion. If the translated note reads as a recommendation, the part that arrives at incoming inspection may not be the part your engineers designed.

That is why we treat every note on the sheet as contractual language. Our team has spent 15 years translating drawing packages between English, German, Spanish, Chinese, and a dozen other languages for machine builders, fabricators, and their US supply chains. The words are few, but each one is load-bearing, and the reviewer who checks the target text reads it the way a shop foreman would: what exactly am I being told to do?

The stakes climb with the industry. A misread finishing note on a bracket costs a remake. The same misreading on a flight-critical fitting triggers a nonconformance report, a root-cause investigation, and an awkward call with your customer's quality department. Much of our drawing work comes through aerospace translation projects where that second scenario is exactly what the client is paying us to prevent.

Title Blocks, General Notes, and the Tables That Frame the Sheet

The translatable text on a drawing clusters in predictable zones. The title block carries the part name, material callout, scale, sheet size, drawing number, and approval fields. General notes, usually stacked in the upper left or lower right, hold heat-treat instructions, surface finish requirements, deburring rules, and references to applicable standards. Then there are the tables: hole charts, weld tables, and the on-sheet parts list.

Each zone has its own rules. Drawing numbers, revision letters, and standard references stay exactly as drawn; translating "ASTM A36" into anything else would break the reference. Part names and material descriptions do get translated, and they must match the wording used everywhere else in your documentation. When the parts list on the sheet feeds a released BOM, we align it with our work on bills of materials so the same component carries the same name on the drawing, in the ERP, and in the spare parts catalog.

General notes deserve the most care because they compress the designer's intent into terse imperatives. "ALL DIMS APPLY AFTER PLATING" changes how every measurement on the sheet is interpreted. We translate notes as a block, in sequence, and flag any note whose meaning depends on a standard the target-market shop may not use.

GD&T Under ASME Y14.5: What Gets Translated and What Never Should

Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing is the closest thing engineering has to a universal script. The symbols defined in ASME Y14.5, position, flatness, perpendicularity, profile of a surface, mean the same thing in a feature control frame whether the drawing was made in Stuttgart or San Antonio. We never touch them. Datum letters, basic dimensions, and modifier symbols such as MMC and LMC pass through untranslated, always.

What does need translation is the language around the frames. Notes that invoke GD&T concepts in prose ("perpendicularity applies before coating"), tolerance explanations in the drawing margin, and any local annotation that restricts or extends a control. This is also where standards diverge: a European supplier drawing may follow ISO 1101 rather than ASME Y14.5, and the two systems disagree on subtle points such as default tolerancing rules and the meaning of an unadorned dimension. Our translators annotate these differences instead of silently absorbing them, because a US buyer reading a translated German drawing needs to know that ISO 2768 general tolerances were in force, not ASME defaults.

When a drawing package supports a purchasing document, we coordinate terminology with the governing spec. Several clients ask us to handle the drawing set and the related technical specification translation together for exactly this reason: the spec defines the words, the drawing repeats them, and both must agree.

First Angle or Third Angle: The Projection Trap Between the US and Europe

American drawings use third angle projection; most European and many Asian drawings use first angle. The views are arranged in mirrored positions, so a machinist trained on one convention can genuinely misread a drawing made in the other, seeing a left-side view where a right-side view is intended. The projection symbol in the title block, a small truncated cone shown in two views, is the only warning the reader gets.

One symbol prevents a mirrored part. The truncated-cone projection symbol in the title block is the only indication of whether a sheet uses first or third angle projection. On translated drawing sets that cross the Atlantic, we verify it is present on every sheet and call out its absence in our delivery notes, because a missing symbol has produced physically mirrored parts more than once in industry lore.

Translation does not change the projection, but a translated drawing is by definition a drawing crossing conventions. We flag the projection method in our delivery notes for every package that moves between ASME and ISO environments, and when clients ask, we add a translated note near the title block stating the convention explicitly. It costs nothing and has saved at least one client a scrapped batch of castings.

A short story from our files: a Texas machine shop won a contract to produce weldments from a set of Czech drawings. We translated 180 sheets into English, and our reviewer noticed the projection symbol was missing on eleven of them, sheets that had been redrawn in-house by the Czech supplier. The shop confirmed with the customer before cutting steel. Two of the eleven were first angle; the rest had been redrawn in third angle. Nobody had noticed on the source side.

TYP, REF, THRU: Abbreviations and Their Foreign Counterparts

Drawing abbreviations are a compressed dialect, and every language has its own. US drawings write TYP, REF, THRU, CBORE, CSK, FIM. German drawings answer with their own shorthand, and a translator who has never stood at a drafting station will either leave the reader guessing or, worse, expand an abbreviation incorrectly. Here is a sample of how we handle the common ones between English and German:

The table is a glimpse, not the whole method. Revision Blocks and Keeping Language Versions in Step

The revision block is the drawing's memory. Every released change gets a letter or number, a date, a description, and an approval. When a drawing lives in two languages, the revision history must stay synchronized or the two versions quietly drift apart, and six months later nobody can say whether the Spanish sheet at Rev C reflects the English Rev D that engineering released in March.

Our rule is simple: the translated drawing carries the same revision identifier as its source, and the revision description is translated along with everything else. When you release a new revision, you send us only the changed sheet or the change description, and we update the target version against translation memory. Unchanged notes are not retranslated, which keeps the cost of a revision cycle to a fraction of the original job and, more importantly, keeps wording stable. A note that read "Endurecer a 42 HRC" at Rev B must not become "Templar a 42 HRC" at Rev C for no reason.

How We Fit Into Your Drafting Workflow

Most clients send PDFs, and PDFs work fine: we return either a fully re-created translated sheet or a numbered overlay that your drafting team applies in minutes. But when you can share native files, the work gets faster and cleaner. We extract text directly from DWG and DXF layers, translate it in a controlled environment, and reinject it without touching the geometry. Engineering Drawing Translation: Frequent Questions

Can you work from native DWG files, or do you need PDFs?

Both work. From a PDF we either re-create the translated sheet or deliver a numbered overlay your drafters apply directly. From a native DWG or DXF we extract the text from layers, blocks, and attributes, translate it, and reinject it with the geometry untouched, which is faster and eliminates transcription risk. If your set mixes formats, which is common with older archives, we sort the package at intake and quote each portion by the method it needs. How do you handle drawing abbreviations like TYP, REF, and THRU?

Before translation starts, we scan the full package and compile every abbreviation into a project glossary with a proposed target rendering for each. Your engineering lead approves the glossary, and it then governs the whole job. Some abbreviations are expanded, some are mapped to a target-language convention such as the ISO parenthesis rule for reference dimensions, and some stay as-is with a gloss. Nothing is expanded silently, because a wrong expansion is worse than an untranslated abbreviation.

What happens to revision indices when a drawing is updated?

The translated drawing always carries the same revision identifier as its source, and the revision block entry is translated with the rest of the sheet. When you release a new revision, you send the changed sheet or the change description only. We update against translation memory, so unchanged notes keep their exact prior wording and you pay only for what changed. This keeps the English and target versions verifiably in step across the life of the product.

Do GD&T symbols and dimensions get translated?

No, and they should never be. Feature control frames, datum letters, modifier symbols, and all numeric dimensions defined under ASME Y14.5 or ISO 1101 pass through untouched. What we translate is the prose around them: general notes, margin annotations, and any text that restricts or extends a geometric control. Where the source and target markets follow different standards, ASME versus ISO, we flag interpretation differences such as default tolerance rules in our delivery notes rather than absorbing them silently.

Can you handle large volumes of drawings on a deadline?

Yes. Packages of 500 to 1,500 sheets are routine. We run extraction, translation, and review as parallel tracks coordinated by a single terminologist, so consistency holds even with several translators working at once. A typical 800-sheet package with moderate text density ships in two to three weeks including independent review. How do you protect the intellectual property on our drawings?
