What our technical localization services deliver beyond translation
A translated document tells the reader what the source said. A localized document tells the reader what to do, in the units, formats, and regulatory frame of the place where they are standing. Our technical localization services exist for that second job. The linguistic work is handled by certified translators who specialize in your field, and around it we add an engineering adaptation layer: measurement conversion, standards mapping, electrical specification checks, date and number formatting, paper size, safety symbol conventions, and local support details.
The distinction matters most in documents that drive physical action. When we are localizing user manuals, a wiring section that references 230 V and 50 Hz is a defect for the US market even if every sentence is grammatically flawless. The same goes for a torque spec in newton meters handed to a technician holding a foot-pound wrench, or a DIN fastener callout in a parts list where the local supplier stocks ASTM grades. We treat these as errors of the same severity as a mistranslation, because the consequence on the shop floor is identical.
Scope-wise, the service covers user documentation, installation and commissioning content, datasheets, training handouts, labeling text, and packaging inserts. Units, electrical specifications, and formats: the engineering layer
Unit handling sounds trivial until you do it at scale. Converting 10 bar to 145.04 psi is arithmetic; deciding that the manual should say 145 psi, that a calibration table must keep four significant digits, and that a safety-relief setting cannot be rounded at all is engineering judgment. Our conversion pass distinguishes between descriptive values, where sensible rounding improves readability, and normative values such as tolerances, torque limits, and setpoints, where we convert exactly and flag anything that rounding would push outside its stated band.
Electrical content gets its own check. Grid voltage and frequency statements, plug and receptacle types, breaker ratings, and motor nameplate data are compared against the destination market. A heater rated for 230 V / 50 Hz does not simply become a 120 V / 60 Hz heater because the text changed; when the hardware differs by market, we align the document with the correct SKU and flag mismatches to your engineering contact rather than papering over them.

Formats round out the layer: decimal separators, thousands separators, time notation, phone number patterns, and address blocks all switch to the target convention. For documents headed into the US, hazard communication text is checked against OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1200 conventions for signal words and pictogram usage, and drawing callouts follow ASME Y14.5 terminology where dimensioning language appears in prose.
Mapping DIN, EN, and JIS references to ANSI and ASTM
Standards references are where localization earns its keep. A European manual may cite DIN EN 10025 for structural steel, ISO 4762 for socket head cap screws, or EN 60204-1 for machine electrical safety. A US reader works against ASTM A36, ASME B18.3, and NFPA 79. Some of these pairs are close equivalents, some overlap only partially, and some have no counterpart at all.
Our process is conservative by design. Where an equivalence is published and recognized, we cite the local standard alongside the original. Where the overlap is partial, we keep the original reference and add the nearest local standard with a note. Where no equivalent exists, the original stays and the reference lands on an exception list for your engineers. Every substitution is recorded in a standards mapping table delivered with the project, so your compliance team can verify the chain instead of trusting it. In fifteen years of doing this work we have never let a translator silently swap a normative reference, and that policy has survived every audit a client has thrown at it.
The same discipline applies in reverse for US manufacturers exporting to Europe or Asia, and it extends to the certification marks and declarations mentioned in text: UL, CSA, CE, and PSE statements describe different legal facts and are never treated as interchangeable labels.
Choosing the right locale: es-MX, es-419, fr-CA, and their neighbors
Every project starts with a locale decision, and we refuse to make it by default. Spanish is the clearest case. Mexican Spanish (es-MX) matches trade vocabulary used by technicians in Mexico. European Spanish (es-ES) reads foreign on a Monterrey factory floor. Latin American Spanish (es-419) is a deliberately neutral register that serves multi-country distribution at the cost of some local color. Which one is right depends on your installed base, your distributor network, and occasionally on a regulator: import documentation for a specific country should follow that country's usage.
French splits the same way. Canadian French (fr-CA) has distinct terminology preferences and, in some sectors, legal drafting conventions that differ from fr-FR; Quebec workplace documentation in particular follows local usage that a Parisian translator will not produce naturally. The decision goes into the account style sheet, and every later project inherits it, which is how you avoid a documentation library that drifts between variants over the years.

The checklist is not decoration. Point 2 alone has caught wiring diagrams that referenced the wrong market variant in three separate projects, and point 7 routinely surfaces warranty periods that legal never intended to offer abroad.
How the work moves through our shop
Delivery follows an ISO 17100-compliant process, which in practice means defined roles and a revision stage that is never optional. A project manager audits your source files and builds a localization kit: termbase extract, style sheet, locale decision, unit and standards rules. Translation is done by a specialist in your subject area working into their native variant. A second, independent linguist then revises the full text against the source, and a technical reviewer runs the 12-point checklist. Nothing ships on a single pair of eyes, whatever the deadline.
One project illustrates the flow. A European HVAC manufacturer came to us with 40 installation guides for its US market entry. The linguistic volume was modest; the adaptation load was not. Refrigerant line sizing appeared in millimeters, wiring sections assumed 230 V single-phase, and fitting callouts were BSP throughout. Our reviewers converted line sizes to inch designations, aligned the electrical sections with the 208–230 V / 60 Hz US models, rewrote fitting references to NPT after confirming the US parts list, and flagged two guides whose hardware had no US variant yet. The client's support team later told us the flagged guides would have generated field failures if published as translated. Quality you can measure: SAE J2450
Opinions about translation quality are cheap, so we score it instead. SAE J2450 is a quality metric originally developed for automotive service information and now used well beyond it. A reviewer samples the delivered text, tags every error against seven defined categories, from wrong term and omission to punctuation, weights each as serious or minor, and normalizes the total by word count. The output is a number, comparable across languages, vendors, and releases.
Terminology dominates the error budget. Across the localization projects we scored last year, wrong-term errors carried more J2450 weight than all grammar and punctuation categories combined, which is why termbase validation is checklist point 12 and not an optional extra.
On continuing accounts we report the score with every major release and track the trend. A rising score triggers a root-cause review before it becomes a client complaint. The metric also gives procurement something concrete to write into an SLA: a maximum normalized score, a sampling method, and a remedy. We are comfortable signing up to that, and we put the method in the statement of work so both sides measure the same way. What technical localization costs and how we quote it
Localization is quoted as translation plus named engineering tasks, never as a vague premium. The linguistic portion is priced per word, with translation memory discounts applied to repeated and previously translated segments. On top of that, the quote itemizes conversion and verification work, standards mapping, layout adjustment, graphics text handling, and the checklist review, each as its own line. Typical projects land 15 to 30 percent above a plain translation of the same files, and the itemization lets you see exactly where that difference comes from and trim tasks your own team wants to keep in-house.
Two cost behaviors are worth knowing in advance. Specification-dense documents such as datasheets carry more adaptation cost per word than prose procedures, because nearly every line contains a value that needs a decision. And the second language into a market is cheaper than the first, because the locale decisions, mapping tables, and rules created for the first language are reused. Clients localizing into four or five markets see the engineering line items shrink steadily after the pilot language.

What is the difference between localization and translation?
Translation converts the words of a document into another language. Localization adapts everything around the words so the document works in the destination market: units of measure, voltage and frequency statements, standards references, date and number formats, paper size, safety symbol conventions, and support contact details. A translated manual can be linguistically perfect and still tell a US technician to check a 230 V supply or torque a fitting in newton meters. Should we choose es-MX or es-419 for Latin America?
It depends on where the equipment ships and who supports it. If Mexico represents most of your installed base, es-MX gives technicians vocabulary that matches local trade usage. If your distribution spreads across Mexico, Colombia, Chile, and Peru, es-419 offers a neutral Latin American Spanish that avoids strongly regional terms. Do you convert units of measure or show both systems?
We follow the convention that fits the document type and the market, then apply it consistently. For US-bound documents the primary value is imperial with the metric original in parentheses on first use, for example 145 psi (10 bar). For legal and warranty text we keep the certified original value and add the converted figure as reference only. Torque tables, tolerances, and calibration values get an engineering check after conversion, because naive rounding can push a value outside its tolerance band. The approach is agreed at kickoff and written into the localization checklist for your account.
Can you map DIN and EN standards to ANSI and ASTM equivalents?
Yes, within clear limits. Where a recognized equivalence exists, such as material grades that appear in both DIN EN and ASTM designations, we cite the local equivalent alongside the original reference. Where no true equivalent exists, we keep the original standard and flag the reference for your engineering team instead of guessing. The output is a standards mapping table delivered with the project so your compliance staff can verify every substitution. We never silently swap a normative reference, because the legal meaning of a cited standard belongs to your engineers, not to a translator.
