Traditional Chinese is not converted Simplified: the terminology proves it

The most expensive misunderstanding in Chinese localization is the belief that Traditional and Simplified Chinese are the same language in two fonts. They are two written standards with divergent technical vocabularies. "Software" is 軟體 in Taiwan and 软件 on the mainland: different characters and a different word. The same split runs through the core of technical language: 品質 versus 质量 for quality, 記憶體 versus 内存 for memory, 印表機 versus 打印机 for printer, 網路 versus 网络 for network. A conversion script maps character shapes one at a time; it cannot know that a Taiwanese engineer has never called a printer a 打印機. The output looks Traditional and reads foreign, which is why demand for genuine Traditional Chinese technical translation services keeps growing even among companies that already buy Simplified Chinese translation at volume.

Taiwan manufactures roughly 90% of the world's most advanced logic chips, and TSMC's multi-fab buildout in Phoenix has physically connected that ecosystem to the American Southwest. Localizing an application or HMI for Taiwan means more than translating strings: date formats may follow the ROC calendar (year 民國 114 is 2025), measurement contexts stay metric, and UI vocabulary must be Taiwanese (檔案 for file, 設定 for settings). Because Chinese characters are information-dense, translated strings usually shrink, which hides a subtler problem: truncation limits set for English no longer flag overlong strings, while composed messages break because Chinese word order differs. Hong Kong reads Traditional Chinese differently

Hong Kong also writes Traditional characters, but it is not Taiwan. Hong Kong usage (zh-HK) absorbs Cantonese vocabulary and, in technical contexts, often follows mainland-derived terms written in Traditional script: software is commonly 軟件 in Hong Kong, the Traditional-character form of the mainland word, where Taiwan insists on 軟體. Legal and government documents operate under the bilingual English-Chinese framework inherited from the Basic Law, so contracts and compliance documents frequently need mirrored English and Chinese versions with matched clause numbering. For US companies, Hong Kong work tends to be commercial and regulatory (product documentation, dangerous goods declarations, building services specifications) rather than fab-centered. At intake we ask one question that decides everything downstream: Taiwan, Hong Kong, or both? When the answer is both, we produce a zh-TW master and a reviewed zh-HK adaptation, because a single "generic Traditional" text serves neither reader well.

Typography and DTP: stroke density, Big5 legacy, and Han unification

Traditional characters are visually denser than Simplified ones (龜 versus 龟 is the extreme example), and that density has practical consequences. Print below roughly 10 points turns complex characters into gray smudges, so warning labels and datasheet footnotes often need larger type or redesigned layouts than their English sources. Fonts must be genuinely Traditional: Noto Sans TC, Microsoft JhengHei, or PMingLiU for Taiwan, with zh-Hant language tagging so that Han unification does not silently render Japanese or Simplified glyph variants of shared code points. Punctuation is full-width, with the enumeration comma (、) and corner quotation marks (「」) that Taiwan style requires. Legacy files add one more trap: decades of Taiwanese engineering documents live in Big5 encoding, and opening them as UTF-8 produces mojibake that must be repaired before translation can start. Reading Taiwanese documents from the inside: dates, seals, and numbers

Inbound Traditional Chinese documents carry conventions that trip up readers who only know the mainland or the West. The most common is the calendar. Taiwanese certificates, test reports, and government filings routinely date themselves in the ROC calendar, counting from 1912: a calibration certificate stamped 民國113年5月20日 was issued on May 20, 2024, not in some misprinted year 113. We convert every such date and flag the original, because a US quality system that logs the raw number will schedule the next calibration nineteen centuries early or reject the certificate as expired. Company chops are the second trap: Taiwanese firms execute documents with registered seals rather than signatures alone, and a quality agreement without the right red chop may not bind the supplier. Our translations identify each seal, transcribe the company name it contains, and note its placement, which is exactly the information a US contracts manager needs when validating the counterpart's execution.

Then come the numbers themselves. Taiwanese engineering text is metric throughout, but large quantities are grouped in myriads: 萬 (10,000) and 億 (100,000,000), so 3.5億 is 350 million, and a translator converting carelessly by factors of a thousand introduces order-of-magnitude errors that survive every spell check. Full-width digits (123) coexist with half-width ones in older files and break spreadsheets on import; we normalize them during translation. Personal names appear family-name first, and technical staff often use both a Chinese name and an adopted English name in the same correspondence, so our project glossaries track name equivalences to keep audit trails coherent. None of this is exotic to a translator who grew up with these documents. All of it is invisible to a conversion script.

What is the difference between Traditional and Simplified Chinese for technical documents?

Traditional Chinese, used in Taiwan and Hong Kong, and Simplified Chinese, used in mainland China, differ in character forms and, more importantly for technical work, in vocabulary. Software is 軟體 in Taiwan and 软件 on the mainland; quality is 品質 versus 质量; memory is 記憶體 versus 内存. A document translated for one market reads as foreign in the other even when every character displays correctly. For technical documentation the two are separate target languages with separate translators, glossaries, and translation memories, and we manage them as such.

Can you just auto-convert our Simplified Chinese files into Traditional?

We advise against it, and we do not sell it as translation. Conversion tools map character shapes but leave mainland vocabulary in place, producing text a Taiwanese engineer immediately recognizes as converted: a 打印機 in a document that should say 印表機 signals exactly that. Conversion also mishandles one-to-many mappings, where a single Simplified character corresponds to several Traditional ones depending on meaning. When budget is tight, the workable compromise is native adaptation: a zh-TW translator rewrites from the Simplified version against the English source, which costs less than new translation but keeps a native result.

Do Taiwan and Hong Kong use the same Traditional Chinese?

They share the script but not the usage. Taiwanese technical writing follows its own terminology (軟體 for software, 專案 for project), while Hong Kong usage carries Cantonese influence and often adopts mainland-derived terms in Traditional script, such as 軟件 for software. Regulatory contexts differ too: Taiwan documents reference CNS standards and BSMI or TFDA requirements, while Hong Kong operates a bilingual English-Chinese legal framework. Which fonts should our manuals use for Traditional Chinese?

Use fonts designed for Traditional Chinese with full glyph coverage: Noto Sans TC or Microsoft JhengHei for screen and general print, PMingLiU or a serif Ming face for formal documents. Tag content zh-Hant so rendering engines do not substitute Japanese or Simplified glyph variants of unified code points. Keep body text at 10 points or larger, since high stroke-count characters lose legibility below that, and preserve full-width punctuation including the enumeration comma and corner quotes.
