UL 94 flammability: a rating you cannot round
Few specifications in plastics are as consequential, or as easy to get wrong in translation, as a UL 94 flammability rating. UL 94 classifies how a plastic burns and self-extinguishes, and the ratings form a strict hierarchy: 5VA and 5VB at the top, then V-0, V-1, V-2, and HB as the least demanding. A material rated V-0 has been tested to a specific vertical burn behavior at a stated thickness. Drop the thickness qualifier or shift the class by one step and you have described a different, non-equivalent material.
We treat UL 94 ratings, and the flammability sections of any datasheet, as fixed technical values. The class, the thickness at which it was achieved and any supporting test data travel through the translation unchanged.
