American agriculture runs on two languages. PRIA 5 and the New Era of Bilingual Pesticide Labels
The Pesticide Registration Improvement Act of 2022, known as PRIA 5 and signed into law in December 2022, did something FIFRA had never done: it made Spanish translation of parts of the pesticide label a federal requirement. This is exacting work. "Signal word" pairs are fixed: DANGER becomes PELIGRO, WARNING becomes AVISO, CAUTION becomes PRECAUCIÓN, and improvising a synonym creates a label deficiency. First aid language must track the English exactly, because a Spanish sentence that softens "call a poison control center immediately" changes the legal content of the label.
