A US manufacturer sourcing fasteners from Jiangsu needs the governing GB standard in English before the first purchase order, because the supplier's certificate of analysis will cite it clause by clause. Copyright comes first: what you may do with a translated standard

Standards are copyrighted works. ISO, IEC, ANSI, DIN, AFNOR, and their peers fund standardization by selling documents, and they enforce their rights. Translating a standard you have legitimately purchased, for your own organization's internal use, is the normal and accepted practice this service exists for. Republishing that translation, selling it, posting it to a public server, or distributing it beyond your organization is a different matter entirely, and we will tell you so before you find out the expensive way.

Our intake process asks three questions. Do you hold a licensed copy of the source document? Does an official translation already exist, as it often does for major ISO documents and for JIS standards sold in English by the Japanese Standards Association? And who, precisely, needs to read the result? The answers shape the deliverable: typically a translation marked for internal use, tied to your license, with the standard's designation and edition stated on every page. Where an official English version exists, buying it is usually cheaper and always safer, and we say so even though it costs us the project. That candor is one reason procurement teams keep coming back.

Shall, should, may, can: where requirements survive or die

The ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 define the verbal forms standards must use, and the entire compliance value of a translation hangs on respecting them. A translator who renders a German "sollte" as "must" has just invented a requirement; one who softens a "shall" has deleted one. The same discipline exists in every standards culture: French normative texts distinguish "doit" from "il convient de", Chinese standards use 应 for requirements and 宜 for recommendations, Japanese drafting separates しなければならない from することが望ましい. These mappings are fixed conventions, and we apply them as such.

The distinction is not academic. Conformity assessment lives on it: a test house checks "shall" clauses, an auditor writes findings against them, and a declaration that your product meets a standard is a declaration about its requirements, not its recommendations. Chinese GB and Japanese JIS standards into English

The heaviest demand we see is for Chinese national standards. Sourcing from China means living with the GB system, and the first thing a buyer must know is the difference hidden in the prefix: GB standards are mandatory, GB/T standards are recommended, and a supplier quoting "GB/T" has told you something about enforceability that a careless translation erases. Material grades, test methods, and tolerance classes in GB documents do not map cleanly onto ASTM or ISO habits, and the translator's task is to render what the Chinese text says, not what an American engineer would expect it to say.

A sourcing example from our practice: a fastener buyer commissioned an English translation of GB/T 3098.1, the mechanical properties standard its Chinese supplier certified against, expecting a mirror of ISO 898-1. The texts are closely aligned, but the buyer's engineers found a difference in how the certificate referenced property classes for one product range, which explained a string of puzzling incoming-inspection results. DIN, NF, and the layered world of European adoptions

European standards come wrapped in layers, and each layer changes what a translation must capture. A designation like DIN EN ISO 4014 tells a careful reader that an ISO document was adopted as a European standard and then published nationally in Germany. The core text may match the ISO original, but the national edition adds a German foreword, sometimes national annexes, and occasionally national deviations, called A-deviations, that modify requirements for that country. A translation that skips the foreword and annexes because "the ISO part exists in English already" misses precisely the content the client could not get anywhere else.

CEN and CENELEC publish European standards in three official language versions, English, French, and German, all equally authoritative. That helps when a client's document chain cites the German edition: we can align our terminology with the official English version rather than re-deriving it, and we say in the deliverable when we have done so. Purely national documents enjoy no such help. VDE safety standards, DVS welding guidelines, older DIN documents never taken up into the EN system, and French NF standards outside the harmonized catalog exist only in their source language, and these make up a steady share of our German and French workload for machine builders and their US customers.

The practical trigger is usually a specification or a contract. A German customer's drawing calls out DIN 6784 edge conditions; a French tender invokes NF standards for electrical installations; a US plant inherits equipment documented against VDE requirements. The engineers need the invoked text, in full, with its national quirks visible, before they can sign what the contract asks them to sign.

Equivalences are flagged, never improvised

The most dangerous sentence in standards work begins "which is equivalent to". ASTM A36 and EN 10025 S275 are frequently treated as interchangeable structural steels; they differ in yield strength specification, chemistry limits, and testing regime, and a translator who writes one as the other has made an engineering decision without a license to. The same trap surrounds hardness scales, weld acceptance criteria, and electrical clearances, where two standards measure similar things by different methods.

House rule: a translation states what the source standard says. Where a recognized counterpart exists in another system, we add a clearly marked translator's note identifying it as a related document, never as an equivalent, unless your engineers have documented the equivalence themselves. Deciding technical equivalence is engineering work, and it belongs to you.

Translator's notes carry other load too: untranslatable designations, references to withdrawn editions, and national deviations in European adoptions of ISO documents. Notes are numbered, collected in an annex, and kept visually distinct from the normative text, so no reader ever mistakes our commentary for the standard's content. Test methods cited inside standards get particular care, since the lab result is only as comparable as the method reference; the discipline is the same one described on this page for laboratory reports.

Defined terms: clause 3 rules the whole document

Every standard carries a terms-and-definitions clause, and it functions as law for the rest of the text. If clause 3 defines "lot", every later "lot" means exactly that, and the translation must use one target term for it with perfect consistency across 80 pages. We extract clause 3 first, translate it, and lock it as the project glossary before touching the body. Terms defined by reference to other standards, as in "see ISO 9000:2015, 3.6.11", keep their citations intact, because the definition lives there, not here.

For clients translating several related standards, the glossary compounds in value. A family of documents, say a product standard, its test methods, and its quality requirements, shares vocabulary, and translating them against one termbase produces a coherent library instead of three dialects. The termbase itself is a deliverable: sourcing teams circulate it to suppliers, and quality teams reuse it when localizing their own system documents, a workflow that pairs naturally with our quality manual translation work, where ISO 9001's own consecrated terminology sets the tone.

From standard to specification: how the translation gets used

A translated standard rarely sits alone. It feeds purchase specifications, drawing notes, inspection plans, and contracts, and the vocabulary must hold steady across that whole chain. When your engineers write a procurement spec that invokes clauses of a standard we translated, the spec should quote our rendering verbatim, and we support that by delivering translations in copy-friendly formats with clause numbering preserved to the decimal. Many clients bundle this with technical specification translation so the invoked text and the invoking text are handled by the same team against the same termbase.

Is it legal to translate an ISO or ASTM standard?

Translating a standard you have legitimately purchased, for internal use within your organization, is accepted practice and is what this service provides. What copyright law and the standards bodies' license terms prohibit is redistribution: selling the translation, publishing it, or passing it outside your organization. We confirm at intake that you hold a licensed copy, we mark deliverables for internal use, and where an official translation already exists we recommend buying it instead. If your use case is unusual, we help you frame the question for the standards body before work begins.

Can you translate Chinese GB standards into English?

Yes, this is one of our highest-volume requests. Our Simplified Chinese team includes native readers with engineering and manufacturing backgrounds who work with GB and GB/T documents weekly. We preserve the distinction between mandatory GB standards and recommended GB/T standards, keep Chinese designations and property classes exactly as written, and flag any place where the text relates to an ISO counterpart without ever presenting the two as equivalent. How do you translate shall versus should?

According to the fixed conventions of standards drafting. Shall marks a requirement, should a recommendation, may a permission, and can a possibility, per the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2, and equivalent conventions exist in Chinese, Japanese, German, and French normative writing. We map them mechanically, never stylistically, because a shifted verb creates or deletes a compliance obligation. Do you deliver a glossary with the translated standard?

Yes. The terms-and-definitions clause is translated first and locked as the project termbase, and that termbase ships with your delivery in spreadsheet form. Clients circulate it to suppliers, cite it in purchase specifications, and reuse it when translating related standards or their own quality documents, so the vocabulary stays consistent across the whole documentation chain. When you later send us another standard from the same family, we start from your existing termbase rather than from zero.

Can we share a translated standard with our suppliers?

Only within the limits of your license from the standards body, and those limits vary. Some licenses cover a single site, others an enterprise; sharing with an external supplier generally requires the supplier to hold its own copy of the source standard, with your translation provided as a reading aid under NDA. We are not your copyright counsel, but we know where the lines usually fall, and we will flag any planned distribution that looks like it needs a license extension before it becomes a dispute.

How long does it take to translate a standard?

A typical national standard of 30 to 60 pages takes 7 to 12 business days, including glossary construction, translation, independent revision, and the normative-verb check.
