Right to Left: What RTL Does to a Technical Layout
Arabic runs right to left, and that single fact reorganizes every page. Text alignment flips. Table columns reverse order, so the parameter column that sat on the left in English sits on the right in Arabic. Margins mirror because books bind on the right edge. Arrows in process flow diagrams point the other way, and a badly converted P&ID legend can end up implying flow in the wrong direction. Software dialogs, callout balloons, and numbered step sequences all need mirroring decisions made deliberately, not left to the word processor's default behavior.
The hardest part is bidirectionality. Technical Arabic is never purely RTL: part numbers, equations, unit symbols like kPa or Nm³/h, and Latin-script model names embed left-to-right runs inside right-to-left sentences. Word processors resolve these runs with the Unicode bidirectional algorithm, and when nobody supervises it, a tolerance of "5-10 mm" can display as "10-5 mm". ١٢٣ or 123: Numerals Are a Decision, Not an Accident
Arabic documents use two digit systems. Western Arabic numerals (123) dominate in Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia and in most engineering contexts everywhere. Eastern Arabic-Indic numerals (١٢٣) remain common in Egypt and the Gulf, particularly in government, legal, and consumer-facing text. Saudi ministries publish with Arabic-Indic digits; Aramco engineering documents largely use Western digits. Neither choice is wrong, but mixing them within one manual looks careless, and the decimal separator question rides along with it, since formal Arabic typography uses the ٫ mark where US English uses a period.
We settle the numeral convention with you at kickoff, record it in the project style sheet, and enforce it mechanically across the delivery. The same style sheet fixes date formats, since Gulf documents may carry Gregorian dates, Hijri dates, or both, and a contract effective date rendered only in the Hijri calendar has surprised more than one American legal team reviewing a distributor agreement.
Two calendars run in parallel in Saudi documents. The Umm al-Qura (Hijri) calendar is roughly 11 days shorter per year than the Gregorian calendar, so a warranty period defined in Hijri years quietly expires sooner. We flag every date system explicitly in translated contracts and certificates.
